What is the Premier's Reading Challenge?

The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is available for all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 9, in government, independent, Catholic and home schools.

What are the rules?

  Kindergarten - Year 2 Year 3 - Year 4 Year 5 - Year 6
      Year 7 - Year 9
When does the PRC start? The PRC opens on the 26th of February 2024. You must complete your online Student Reading Record by the 23rd August 2024 (11:59pm) to complete the Challenge.
How many books do I need to read? 30 Books
  • 25 from PRC list
  • 10 of your choosing
  • Only 5 books can be from the same series
20 Books
  • 15 from PRC list
  • 10 of your choosing
  • Some books can be from the 5-6 or 7-9 level
  • Only 5 books can be from the same series
20 Books
  • 15 from PRC list
  • 10 of your choosing
  • For Years 5-6, some books can be from the 7-9 level
  • Only 5 books can be from the same series
Do I have to read the books on my own? You can read them on your own, read them with someone, or someone can read them to you. You must read your own, but someone can help you choose.
